4-6 PM

Welcome to Typing Pool, where we aim to change the world at seventy-five words a minute! Join the adventurous site-specific company The Only Animal for a short, immersive piece in beautiful Hadden Park. As new recruits to the Typing Pool, you will be tasked with an important mission: to open your eyes and hearts to the natural world around you and uncover its hidden stories. Part natural narrative, part cadavre exquis, part strenuous digit exercise, Typing Pool mixes live performers, audience participation, and vintage typewriters to create a delightfully engaging, open-air experience.

This workshop can accommodate up to 12 participants at a time. Sign up to participate here!

TOMOYO YAMADA & JEN AOKI – ouroboros
6 PM

“Moving to Vancouver a year ago, I was intrigued by how people here in the city care about and act on environmental issues arising nationwide. Recycling became a natural habit for me to participate in making the earth a better planet for all living creatures, and it has been impressive to see my workplace putting effort focusing on food sustainability and environmentally-friendly business practices: something that is still not widely-recognized in my home country.”

Interlacing text, sound, movement, and performance, artists Jen Aoki and Tomoyo Yamada shed light on unheard voices waiting to be discovered.

ALL BODIES DANCE – Re-imagine; Sanctuary
7:00 PM

Originally created as a duet, Re-imagine Sanctuary takes our audience into the vulnerability of rehearsing and performing in a public outdoor space, this time alone. Re-imagining Sanctuary examines the pulse of the space and body to create a new sanctuary.

MAURA GARCIA DANCE – Aniwisvsgo’i
7:30 PM

Aniwisvsgo’i means “they are always planting” in Cherokee. As planters, we are dependent upon the elements and the “temperament” of the environment in which we find ourselves. Space, location, and time all affect the growing cycle. Aniwisvsgo’i honors Indigenous planting traditions, the elements, and our places in the world. The dance is split into three parts: preparing the ground, planting, and harvest. The thread that connects us to our ancestral homelands, where we live now, and ultimately one another weaves itself in and out this exploration of our relationship with the powers that make growth possible.

ANYA SAUGSTAD Dear Ocean Roaring
8:00 PM

Dear Ocean Roaring takes place in the shore at sunset, and is a collaboration of dance, theatre, and live music. It is an apology and a thank you. It is a moment to connect back to our environment. A moment to look out at the ocean and understand its vastness; to understand that we are not the only creatures playing and living on this earth. To view the ocean as a grave, and as a place of life. We create in a space many others never enter, many others never pass. With all of our privilege, we speak with our bodies.

AMY KIARA RUTH – Ephemeral Nature Mandala to Honour Nature
4-6 PM

Join Amy Ruth Kiara in co-creating an ephemeral nature mandala in Hadden Park, a space of trees adjacent to the water of Snauq (False Creek). Sense the topography of the land; notice how the land undulates toward the water. What bodies of water are close to your heart? What is your wish for water? Consider the prevalence of plastic – can we remove plastic from our daily experience? In a contemplative way, we create a textured pattern with plant materials (petals, twigs, cones, leaves). How does direct contact with plants, with our environment, invite us into a deeper expression of care?

GEORGE RAHIformation
4:30 PM & 8:30 PM

formation is a kinetic sound installation that explores the sculptural dimensions of rotary speakers, using the emergent qualities of their movements to invite listening across the visual and tactile dimensions of sound. Drawing inspiration from the circadian rhythms found across plants, animals, and fungi, the installation’s chorus of pulses gestures towards an eurythmic experience within and between listeners and the surrounding environment.
