Vines Art Festival had a great time taking Resilient Roots into communities in Lil’Wat and St’at’imc earlier this year. We organized youth workshops, plant walks and performances in the forest, and gave shows in amazing bakeries! We are so grateful to have been welcomed into these communities and to have borne witness to deeply powerful performances and teachings from Cease Wyss, Senaqwila Wyss, Badger Jack, Christine Jack, Estíqw, Valeen Jules, Karmella Benedito De Barros, Shawn Moon, and Mika Pierre.
Resilient Roots is the heart of Vines Art Festival bringing together emerging Indigenous artists who are also bearing their souls on the frontline grassroots movements, speaking out against the Pipelines and resource extraction, and combining art with activism. The Resilient Roots Project led by Senaqwila Wyss (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Ethnobotanist), Heather Lamoureux (Artistic Director of Vines Festival) with support from.Sara Cadeau (Anishnaabe Kwe, ceremonialist, singer, writer, maker of medicines and helper of people).
Below are just a few of the photos captured by the talented Karmella Benedito De Barros. We look forward to seeing everyone again soon.
